Tuesday’s Coffee Klatch – Golden Globes Edition

Jan 15, 2013 by

Good morning! Welcome to today’s coffee klatch. I don’t know about you, but I’m a total awards geek. Especially the Golden Globes, which is a lot looser than the Oscars. Last night, I liked the fashions, I liked the hosts, the unplanned speeches, and I loved the candid shots of the camera panning the audience at utterly random times, thus catching Mel Gibson picking his teeth.

Anyhow, that got me to thinking that perhaps what was needed this week was a coffee meet-up compiled of characters played by the some of the movies and television shows that picked up awards Sunday night at the Globes. Without further ado, then, let’s welcome Pi Patel from Life of Pi, Abraham Lincoln from Lincoln, Violet Crawley, Dowager Duchess of Grantham, from Downton Abbey, Clarice Starling from The Silence of the Lambs, and James Bond from Skyfall.

Still from Lincoln film, Daniel Day-Lewis with Joseph Gordon-LevittAbraham Lincoln (Daniel Day-Lewis): Coffee, black. He’s self-conscious about his height but refuses to take his stovepipe hat off. Unfailingly polite, even when the Dowager Duchess of Grantham persists in giving him her tea order and glaring at him when he doesn’t fill it. Is very interested in what Pi Patel has to say; the two of them hit it off enormously.

Still of Maggie Smith as Dowager Duchess of Grantham in Downton AbbeyViolet Crawley, Dowager Duchess of Grantham (Maggie Smith): Tea, Earl Grey. After some initial pointed glares when Lincoln neglects to fill her order, the Dowager Duchess settles in nicely. She’s aghast that Clarice is wearing pants and can’t help flirting with James Bond. “If I were 50 years younger,” she is heard to say.

Still of Irrfan Khan, who played adult Pi Patel in Life of PiPi Patel (Irrfan Khan): Chai tea, although he refuses to drink until he has said grace first. Quickly engages Abraham Lincoln in a deep discussion of politics and theology. Is accepting of everyone, although when James Bond talks about wrestling with Komodo dragons, he looks up and says, “Until you’ve been on a boat with a Bengal Tiger, I’ve got you beat.”

Photo of Daniel Craig as James Bond in SkyfallJames Bond (Daniel Craig): Coffee frappe, shaken not stirred. He and Clarice start to talk about law enforcement and trade stories about arch-villains. He’s courteous, but seems a little disappointed that she is wearing as many clothes as she is. Continues to talk in double entendres anyway.

Still of Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in Silence of the LambsClarice Starling (Jodie Foster):  Coffee, black. Startles when the Duchess begins talking about types of chianti. Mostly thinks this coffee klatch is a waste of time, but humors us with her presence while solving crimes mentally.

Hope you all have a great week!
