More Faves of 2012

Jan 3, 2013 by

Now that we’re three days into 2013, does that make these lists obsolete? Tough noogies.

Favorite Book: This was a surprisingly hard pick. Usually, I reach the end of the year and there are only a couple books that really, seriously affected me. This year wThe Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novelas one of my best years as a reader EVER. But honestly, my absolute favorite book of the year, the one that has stuck around the longest in my head and my heart after reading it, was The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry: A Novel, by Rachel Joyce. This was a road trip book, a love story, a story of friendship all rolled up into one. Absolute greatness.

Runners upThe Fault in Our Stars by John Green; Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; The Call by Yannick Murphy

Favorite Movie: This was a surprisingly easy pick. I saw a fair amount of movies this year, although not as many of the Oscar front-runners as I would have liked, and none of them approached the beauty and transcendence of Life of Pi. From the opening credits sequence of the film, I felt like this would be a film of visual elegance and whimsy, and director Ang Lee told a difficult story with ease and pace.

Favorite Feel-Good Video:

My favorite moments surfing the ‘Net are when I stumble across bits that make me so proud of complete strangers, when I feel like there are many in the world who celebrate imagination and kindness to a degree that makes my heart swell.  Caine’s Arcade is a 10 minute documentary about a little boy who fashioned an entire funhouse arcade world out of cardboard and his faith that people would eventually find it. It’s a beautiful testament to imagination.

So, that’s it for my picks. What were some of your favorite things in 2012?
